In essence, Bulli Bai is a software application that simulates an online auction. ... The app shows photos of more than 100 Muslim women taken from the Internet and pretends to sell them through auctions.

While the auctions are fake, the word “bulli" is a derogatory local slang

Mumbai police on Wednesday said three people had been arrested so far in connection with the ‘Bulli Bai’ app, which targeted Muslim women by posting pictures of themselves online for sale.

Mayank Rawal, 21, was arrested by Mumbai police in Uttarakhand early Wednesday morning in the case. Shweta Singh, 19, was arrested on Tuesday from the province, while engineering student Vishal Kumar Jha, 21, was arrested in Bengaluru on Monday.

Police suspect a number of people may have been involved in the incident.

Mumbai police registered the first information report (FIR) after receiving a complaint about the application on January 2, which followed when investigators launched a technical analysis of the application and the related Twitter handle, Mr Nagrale said.
