On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India was enacted by repealing the Indian Government Act (Act) (1935) on this day itself.

India became a republic on 26 January 1950 at 10.18 am. Six minutes later, at 10.24, Drs. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as India's first President.

On this day, for the first time as President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad walked out of Rashtrapati Bhavan sitting on a cart. For the first time on this day, he paid tribute to the Indian army. He was given the Guard of Honor for the first time.
